For a moment, A'ric could do nothing but stare at the dolphins. Honestly, the bronze rider had never really seen one up close like this before. Seeing them off in the distance was a completely different thing. They were indeed beautiful creatures, and it was things like this that made him even more thankful to be a dragon rider now. Before this, he never would have been able to go on adventures like this. Dark eyes stared at the older dolphin for a moment, shock the only thing registering on the young man's face. Had that dolphin really just spoken to him? Well, to them? Shaking his head bit, as if that would clear his mind and tell him he was being crazy, he tried to just forget about it.

He turned to F'lin and finally said, "Did..they just talk to us?" He still couldn't believe it. He quickly scolded himself. He rode a dragon...how could he not believe that dolphins could talk? Honestly, nothing should surprise him anymore. He felt a little dumb asking that outloud, but it was too late now. Behemoth gave him a snort of agreement and A'ric just rolled his eyes a bit.

Dwelling on it was not going to help, or change anything. Luckily for the bronze pair, A'ric's focus was quickly returned to the present once the dolphins starting swimming away. Without waiting for an order or anything, the big bronze leaped into pursuit, catching his rider a bit off guard. A'ric quickly got situated, scolding the bronze a bit but knowing this was probably their only chance to know what was going on. They just had to make sure they didn't lose site of those dolphins.

There were times Kunati really didn't like her dragon. This was certainly one of them. She always loved Anitath but there were times the garnet really drove her nuts. The Weyr was investigating sea serpent attacks of all things. Such creatures belonged in harper tales or at least they could kindly mind their own business! They had to have been in Pern's oceans for generations by now so why all of a sudden did they have this fixation on the trading boats? Granted they gave her and Anitath something to do other than drills and the occasional Fall they were called out to combat but they had become quite the nuisances.

When the Weyr decided to sent out missions to deal with them Kunati was eager to volunteer-for the scouting group. Anitath however had other ideas. While Kunati was hoping for some relative quiet being away from the Weyr with a smaller group, Anitath argued that her abilities would better serve the Weyr int he larger escort team. For on top of the team she could sense the crews of the ships and would know without looking or hearing from another if something was wrong.

What Kunati hated most was that Anitath was right. If she wanted to do her duty well, give as much to the Weyr's efforts as possible, then she couldn't hide from her gift. Instead she would have to use it, even risk revealing it. Would they think her some sort of spy for not admitting to it sooner though? Kunati did not want to get bombarded with negative feelings...it wasn't her fault! She did her best not to feel anything but since Impressing it was impossible not to. At that she never used what she gleaned to hurt anyone. The most she did was push at Isolde here and there because she wanted her friend to be happy. There was nothing wrong with helping a friend. Or so Kunati told herself. No matter how she rationalized it though she did effectively eavesdrop on people's feelings all the time, even if she was helpless to do more than semi-tune them out. That worry was always there, niggling in the back of her mind. What would the people of the Weyr think if they knew?

At least this gave her another opportunity to use her ability for the good of the Weyr, if not the good of Pern itself. Trading ships affected far more than just Atricis. If she could help keep them safe, help solve the problem with the sea serpents, it was worth the headache of having to carefully monitor and filter so many emotions all around her.

Unfortunately her talent was already proving somewhat useful and not in the way Kunati would have liked. She sensed something off before the rest of the fleet and was not surprised to learn there was a ship lagging behind. Something was up with the people on that one, she could feel it, and so Kunati had urged Anitath over to the ship-just in time to see a young boy dive into the water.

Anitath heard and relayed the Captain's words, as well as Norieth's, while Kunati tried to figure out what possessed the boy to do such a thing. What was he thinking? Or, perhaps more importantly, what was he feeling?

We're coming Norieth! If need be we will haul the boy out of the water-unless you and Ay'li are already on it. A collision won't be of any help to anyone.

1. Following the Dolphins

It was a little shocking to hear the dolphins actually talking to them. Fox had heard stories about it before and knew that it was true, but it was certainly something to hear it for himself. If it wasn't for the worry they were going to be attacked he would have been more excited about getting to hear it. Are they meaning the creature is hurt or it's going to hurt us? Mnenomth asked curiously, speaking to A'ric and Behemoth as well. That is a good question. I'm not sure. I suppose the best way to find out is to follow them. Just as he said that Behemoth took off after the dolphins. Mnenomth beat his wings and followed after the larger bronze.

Tell Behemoth and A'ric to make sure they stay high above the water. We don't need a repeat of what happened to the Istan riders. Fox told his bronze as they too made sure to fly high enough that they wasn't in striking range. Behemoth, Fox suggests to fly higher. We don't want to become these creatures next meal. The dolphins could still be easily seen below them as they raced, in water and air, towards whatever was coming. They all were assuming it was one of the sea monsters, but for all he knew it could be another dolphin or something else. Still, it was better to ere on the side of caution and assume that it was one of the monsters that was coming for the fleet. Fox had no idea how they were going to take care of this problem permanently.

Try to find out where the man wanted to go

As the sandy brown pair moved toward the lagging ship, they were joined by the brilliant red hide of the garnet Anitath, the only one of her kind in Atricis and Ay'li was glad to have them along. From what she knew of the southerner who Impressed the rare color, she was diligent and dutiful, unwavering and steadfast, the perfect kind of rider to have for back up, so she was glad to have Kunati along.

Nearing the vessel, they could see the struggle on the deck and the captain moved closer to the railing to give them the reason for this delay. The Captain seemed befuddled at his own sailor, but told them he was because he need to be with someone. A love left behind? Sailors' remorse? It was fairly strong to be held back by your crew and still desire to jump. Either way, it was nuisance that was foiling all their best laid plans for this fleet to make safe port, and Ay'li wouldn't have a failure on her hands over one love torn sailor.

Before anyone could say anything more, a cry broke out and Ay'li turned in time to see the young man break loose and dash for the side of the ship, not even thinking twice into leaping overboard. The sailors scrambled about for a life line and Norieth was ready to take the plunge yet Anitath's voice broke into her mind to save the boy. Go, get the boy. Make sure he's okay. The Weyrsecond relayed to the garnetrider, giving them leave to rescue the lad while Ay'li took a closer look during the moment of chaos to see which way the lad wanted to swim. Once he'd righted himself after the plunge, he had a definite direction he wanted to go and as she watched the red dragon beside them dive down, her gaze rose up to follow that direction with her line of sight, and the brownrider spurned her mount to fly in that direction as well.

Find out what's wrong with him...What he was swimming for. If it's important, maybe he can lead us to it instead of foolishly risking his life. The woman had Norieth call back to Anitath and Kunati, as they moved out a little ways from the trailing ship, glancing around to see if there was anything obvious that this sailor was trying to reach, or if he was just a little touched in the head from days on end at sea.

Today was the day. N'lon had been waiting for this day for a while and woke up brimming with energy. Sure they could get hurt, but nothing that couldn't be fixed. And okay they could die, but they would go together, so the younger bluerider had no worries for today and the escort mission that he had volunteered to be a part of. He was up early trying to comb some knots out of his jet black hair. With a sigh he gave up and walked out to the pavilion that Byrth shared with other dragons. Hey Byrth wake up. It's time to get ready. Today's the day. He said as he pushed on the blue.

The dragon for his part had been awake as long as the rider had he had just been lazing on his spot on the pavilion, afterall there wasn't must a dragon had to do to get ready. I'm up and have been. You must calm yourself. This is a serious mission that we need to be alert on. Dragon replied as he stood and stretched his wings out. The pair hurried to get ready and were at the meeting place long before most of everyone else. N'lon had suddenly grown quite and serious and listened to every word that the Weyrleader had said with a nod here and there. Byrth had taken off and then pair had decided to keep close to the fleet.

That was until the dolphins began causing an uproar. Being a fisher from birth the young man knew that dolphins could speak and also knew one should heed what they said or warned about. He had heard what was said and decided to rejoin the fleet and allow the other to follow the dolphins. He wanted to follow them, but he knew someone needed to stay with the fleet and protect the trader and other other people aboard. After all that's why he was there and that's why the people had cheered when the wing appeared. So the bright blue and his rider had returned to fly over the fleet, keeping their eyes to the ocean looking for any signs of movement.

Those that are following the dolphins you eventually begin to see a large, long shape moving silently through the water towards them. It is barely a shadow at this point, but it is obviously something and from all the information that has been given to you so far it is almost certain that this is one of the serpents that have been attacking the ships. The dolphins don't seem to be afraid of or phased by the creatures presence as they continued on a course that would meet with it. However, before they can meet in whatever fashion, the long shadow veers in a different direction and begins to speed up. The direction appears to be the end of the fleet of ships where a single ship has lagged behind the others, leaving it vulnerable.

The young man is obviously putting all of his strength and effort into swimming towards...whatever it was he needed to get to. Another small pod of dolphins begin to head in his direction in case he needs a helping hand to not drown himself. To anyone watching from far above, it appears as if the young man is in the direct path of the sea monster now swimming even faster towards the lagging ship. Kunati, as you get closer to try and snag the man out of the water you can feel from him a certain joy and anxiousness to get to something, perhaps even the very serpent he's swimming toward. There's an intermingling sensation as well from the man, something not quite his own yet still felt strongly by him and that is an aching and pain the echoes through him as well.

Those following the dolphins:
  • 1. Warn the others that a serpent is heading for the lagging ship
    2. Ask Ay'li if you should attack the creature
    3. Do nothing but watch

Those with the lagging ship:
  • 1. Warn the captain to get the ship out of the way
    2. Fly to where the long, dark shadow is and wait for orders to attack
    3. Try and help get the young man out of harms way

Kunati:
  • 1. Try to grab the young man
    2. Report what you think you've felt

So far so good. Nothing seemed to be amiss and N'lon and Byrth flew over the fleet as they made their way towards their destination. N'lon realized it was was fool's thought that nothing would go wrong when there were sea serpents in the water somewhere. Look over there. There's a ship lagging. I see it. Head over there Byrth they may need help.

The pair changed course and headed towards the lone ship. Before they could reach it the blue had spotted a shadow moving in the water aiming right for the ship and had angled right for it. There was no time to try to warn the capitan they believed and so they were heading to attack the serpent before it was able to injure the swimmer or the ship.

Dark eyes continued to watch the dolphins, the young bronze rider's mouth still slightly agape. Honestly, he was having a hard time getting over the fact that the dolphins had actually talked to them. Sure, he had heard the stories, but he always thought that that was what they were, just stories. Never had he imagined that these stories would actually be true.

A'ric! Get your mind on our mission and out of the clouds! We've got trouble!

The young man could not help but blush a bit at the bronze's reprimand. Of course, by now, he knew he should be used to it, but sometimes he forgot just how demanding Behemoth could be. A'ric normally tried to ignore him, but this time his dragon had a point when he yelled at him. He had been letting his mind wander. Quickly, he pulled his attention back to what was going on. The shadow was there, under the water, and dark eyes glanced over at Fox. "What should we do? Think we should attack it?" Of course that was what Behemoth wanted to do, but what if it wasn't actually dangerous? He guessed they would just have to wait and see what their orders were.

Attack!

Keen eyes were searching the waters below in the direction it seemed the young man was intent on getting to, trusting in the redrider and the converging shipfish to rescue the sailor should he need it. Their gaze shifted to include the two bronzes nearby hovering over another pod of shipfish and they seemed to be following something as well. Suddenly, they saw it, the shadow just coming into view through the waters and Norieth gave a deep growl in his chest, talons twitching as the sandy brown swiveled on a wingtip to adjust his course and followed after the serpent. Of all the description they had of it, there was very little doubt in their minds that this long serpentine dark shade just under the surface was the very creature they were sent here to protect the fleet from.

A quick glance up confirmed her initial suspicions, it was heading straight for the lagging ship and the swimming sailor so they couldn't let it get any closer. Riders at the ready! Our orders are to defend the fleet and their men. Norieth bellowed to all the minds of the dragons in their Escort Wing. We can't let this monster anywhere near those ships! F'lin draw it out. N'lon and the rest of you be ready to strike with me. A'ric if you get the chance, you and Behemoth latch onto that thing and don't let go, drag it out of the water where our weapons will do the most damage. Kunati, get that sailor to safety. The Weyrsecond snapped off the orders, thinking quickly on her feet and relaying those commands through her dragon.

Next, the brown bespoke directly to the Commander of the Fleet, informing him of the attack and to take evasive maneuvers away from their position with all his ships, including the one lagging behind. Her missing sailor would be returned when all was well, but Ay'li would not let this mission be compromised by sentiment for one man. They were charged with bringing this fleet of ships into port safely, and a lone sea serpent was no match for the Dragonriders of Atricis.

Dark eyes shone a bit with nervousness as the bronze rider continued to watch the shadows. Why he was nervous, he didn't know. Behemoth and he had fought Thread before. He was an experienced rider now, things like this shouldn't make him nervous. Of course Behemoth had to chime in and that just made A'ric shake his head. Behemoth had always shone no fear. A'ric had always had to try and control him during their Thread fights when they were just Weyrlings. Even though they had only been given the task of gathering firestones for the Riders who were fighting, A'ric had constantly had to stop him from trying to take off and join the fight. The bronze did not like being left out, and unfortunately, sometimes he and his rider still butted heads over that. The young man was all for trying to avoid trouble if at all possible, where as his dragon wanted to go racing towards it to try and prove himself.

The big bronze trembled as he heard the order to attack, and for him specifically to try and grab the beast. A'ric laid a hand gently on him. Relax Behemoth. If you are too overeager, you are bound to make a mistake and maybe get us, or someone else, hurt As much as the bronze just wanted to scoff at that, he knew his rider was right. Behemoth quickly calmed himself, knowing they didn't have a lot of time since they had already been ordered to attack.

Finally they were off, although the bronze was a little baffled about how to fight something that was under the water. Honestly, neither the rider nor the dragon had ever fought an enemy like this before. Behemoth, get close to the water and just try and grab it with your claws...maybe that will do it The bronze did as his rider suggested, and felt his claws grab something. A moment later though, they were slipping off. I had it! I just can't keep ahold of it by myself, we need some help! Behemoth broadcast to everyone, not just A'ric. He was frustrated that he hadn't been able to do it himself, and although he hated to have to admit it, he knew he needed help.

Behemoth growled and tried again, but with the same result. He would just have to wait until one of the other members of the mission could come and help him hold onto this thing, whatever it was.
